Statement

How have we seen gender roles shift since the 1970s, and what are their implications for the shape of modern family life? Gender role normativity no longer drives the narrative of what constitutes a family, nor does it dictate the many roles women simultaneously hold both in their social and professional lives. By combining both digital and print mediums to visualize a timeline of notable events through a data-driven lens, this project aims to provide Gen-Z-ers with an investigative, exploratory look at how gender roles have shifted. The rationale behind this project, as well as its intended audience, is to dissect any pre-existing notions that the “norm” is the only path forward. It aims to encourage exploration, provide a sociological lens that bridges the gap between the work and home spheres, and dissect and challenge normative family structures. It introduces the plethora of options that may construct a viable, fulfilling future, despite what societal or family pressures may otherwise imply. It aims to synthesize history, data visualization, and collage art to develop a compelling visual brand that both educates and engages our younger generation in their most formative years.
