Insurance and Liability Coverage

The following is a brief discussion of MICA’s insurance coverages for MICA owned vehicles, rental vehicles, and personal vehicles used for college-related business and other college-related activities.

Liability and Physical Damage

College Owned Vehicles:

MICA-owned vehicles are insured for liability claims. Drivers who have been authorized to use college vehicles to conduct college business and authorized college activities are protected for negligence resulting in bodily injury and property damage to third parties. In addition, legal defense is available through MICA’s insurance with respect to any claim, suit, action or other proceeding relative to any loss or other occurrence that may be covered under the plan. However, employees will not be covered for acts of intentional, malicious, willful and wanton misconduct, or any criminal acts while utilizing the vehicle. MICA also has comprehensive and collision insurance for all MICA owned vehicles to cover damages sustained to vehicles involved in an accident.

For more information on College-owned vehicles, see “Use of College-Owned Vehicles.”

Rental Vehicles:

Insurance for rental vehicles mirrors that of our college owned vehicles. When renting a vehicle in MICA’s name for business purposes in the United States, do not purchase the insurance offered by the rental company. Proof of rental insurance (an insurance card) is available here and at the end of this policy.

Due to the variety of laws and regulations in foreign countries, rented vehicles used in international travel are not covered under MICA’s liability and collision insurance. When traveling outside the United States, please purchase the local insurance through your rental company and MICA will reimburse it as part of the regular expenses listed under business travel. Please remember that the following countries below are excluded in MICA’s travel policies (based on Sanctioned Countries of the US and UN).* Travel to any of those countries requires supervisor approval in advance.

For more information on rented vehicles, see “Use of Rental Vehicles.”

Personal Vehicles:

Accidents involving one’s personal vehicle, even when used for college-related business or college-related activities, are the responsibility of the vehicle owner and should be reported to the vehicle owner’s personal insurance. MICA strongly recommends that anyone who is considering using their personal vehicle for college-related business or college-related activities, especially if driving others (particularly students), should review their personal insurance to make sure they have adequate coverage. Minimum limits for personal insurance are listed at the end of this policy under “Recommended Personal Insurance Limits.”
