Addendum A - Recommended Personal Insurance Limits for Use of Personal Vehicles

In utilizing your personal vehicle for college-related business or college-related activities, employees must understand that their personal vehicle insurance is the primary coverage for accidents and liability in case of an accident (meaning, personal insurance will be responsible for covering any liability or damage in an accident).

In order to drive a personal vehicle to transport others (students or employees) for college-related business or college-related activities, the risk of loss is even greater, both monetarily and reputationally.

When taking on the task of driving your personal vehicle on MICA related business, or transporting students or other employees in personal vehicles, for your protection MICA recommends that drivers have the following insurance coverage:

Incidental Drivers (one event per year):

  • $100,000 per occurrence/$300,000 combined loss for bodily injury and $100,000 for property damage, or a $300,000 combined single limit.

Routine/Regular Drivers (more than one event per year, or employees driving students and/or other employees):

  • $250,000 per occurrence/$500,000 combined loss for bodily injury and $100,000 for property damage or a $300,000 combined single limit.

Please review your personal insurance to see if your coverage meets those limits.
