Statement
I began four years ago to build a world, per my taste, it was and is one of folklore inspired fantasy, well suited to my favorite hobby Dungeons and Dragons. My focus on this creation waxed and waned but it always resurfaced. The work presented here is a mix of illustration, writing and design centered in that world and the roleplaying game. I have included two pieces, The Motherland Campaign Setting Book Cover, and The Continent of Sage, that look to the future goal of publishing a version of this setting for the game. The majority of the work, however, including maps, character illustration, creature design are limited to the augmentation of a single adventure scenario from the world.
The Willow Well Conspiracy: A 5th edition D&D Adventure is a roughly forty page draft of a dramatic interactive mystery scenario. It contains necessary components for a Dungeon/Game Master to guide a party of adventurers through the events of the module. The illustrations are a visualization of the text but not dependent upon it as the text remained in flux while the illustrations were being crafted. The images serve to help the reader realize and navigate the otherwise intangible world. They have been developed through a process of story ideation, sketches, small-scale gouache painting, Procreate and Photoshop.
The world of D&D is full of art, from the illustrated rulebooks and published campaigns to independent content and the personal art of from the community. That is to say that what I have done and will continue to do is not an extraordinary innovation on the form, but rather my personal contribution in line with my values to the canon that has given me so much. The process has also been an experiment in narrative design, and product development, to get a picture of what it takes to produce one of the books that colorfully line my shelves. Taking on every facet of development from project planning to illustration has been a uniquely challenging learning experience. The result however, is a carefully constructed roleplaying experience with a unified vision.
