Statement

Black and Indigenous Americans have always wrestled with the legacies of social hierarchy, colonization, and white supremacy. But the United States—built on slavery and genocide while preaching egalitarianism—has not yet fully addressed its past nor how the past shapes the present. My white American family enacts this omission in our own origin stories. How might I use graphic design to examine, acknowledge, and prompt reflection on the ways I and my family whitewash our histories? How do we tell ourselves who we are? And how can this context help me better understand design practice?
