In the MICA Graphic Design Fall Visiting Designers lecture series, we’re meeting designers working across a variety of media, each of whom will share their perspectives on working as a designer. These might include: how they make space for their voice within the industry, the role their identity plays in their work, how they use design to explore culture, or as a tool for education or activism.
In this installment of the series, Manuel Miranda will present highlights of his current creative practice and insights about his creative process. Miranda is the owner and lead designer of Manuel Miranda Practice (MMP) and works on design projects related to adaptive reuse, advocacy, architecture, art, community and workforce development, theater, and policy. MMP has designed graphic identities, campaigns, websites, publications, signage, and exhibitions for the Center for Urban Pedagogy, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC Economic Development Corporation, Ping Chong and Company, Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design, Spitzer School of Architecture at CCNY, and the Yale School of Architecture. Manuel has been a critic in the graphic design MFA program at the Yale School of Art since 2011. From 2013 to 2016, Manuel served as vice-president of the New York chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, where he programmed lecture series for the Museum of Arts and Design and developed place-based design projects funded by ArtPlace America and the Small Business Services of New York City. In 2015, he led a multi-disciplinary team working in Paterson, New Jersey, that created the winning proposal for Van Alen Institute’s “National Parks Now,” a competition to imagine new audience engagement strategies at urban parks for the National Park Service. In 2016, the Mayor’s Office appointed him to the Public Design Commission for the City of New York, the City’s advocate for excellence and innovation in the public realm. In 2020, Manuel was accepted to Coro Leadership New York, a program that trains civic leaders to understand city issues from multiple stakeholder perspectives. Before starting MMP, he was a designer at Brand Integration Group at Ogilvy, and a design director at 2×4. He received a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Art, and a Bachelor of Arts with a focus on literature and linguistics from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.
