SITES OF SENTIMENT

A water tower, an bronze bell, and a weather vane—functional objects and architectural sites become vessels for personal history and relationships. Mundane structures that pass us by become intertwined with personal sentiment, coming to mind when shuffling through memories. Through reconfiguring fragments of everyday objects, SITES OF SENTIMENT investigates how the material world converges with lived memories and experiences. These works blend into an ordinary environment, but at times step into an alternate, dream-like plane. They are rooted in specific memories, loyal symbols of their place and time. And yet, the gentle glow from the tower, the bright ring of the bell, the rapid spinning of the weather vane, and the frothing of the fountain converge to create an atmosphere that belongs to a landscape of their own.

Reminiscent of landmarks, family heirlooms, and public architecture, these works are carefully constructed using materials such as wood and metal. However, the works occasionally conceal their materiality, thwart their own function, or shift in scale. Their subtle strangeness reflects the ways in which one’s own memories and perceptions drift, warp, and rearrange over time. Yet still, these objects become a pathway, an illumination, and a Site of Sentiment.
