Undergraduate Departments (BFA)

MICA's undergraduate curriculum minimizes barriers among disciplines and provides many opportunities to explore a wide array of interests and to experiment with a variety of mediums and approaches to art-making.

At MICA, painting, sculpture, photography, and other traditional media coexist with interdisciplinary and multi-media programs, and the range of options open to you mirrors the diversity of the world of contemporary art and design. Our curriculum minimizes barriers among disciplines and provides many opportunities to explore a wide array of interests and to experiment with a variety of mediums and approaches to art-making.

The College offers 15 Bachelor of Fine Art degree programs, as well as a BFA/MAT pre-professional program designed to help students make the transition from artist and student to artist-teacher. In addition, our students can choose from 11 studio concentrations or pursue a liberal arts minor.

Our curriculum combines intensive studio coursework with rigorous liberal arts beginning in the foundation year. All MICA freshmen take the same core courses, offered by the Foundation Department. The foundation curriculum is thoughtfully planned, providing the basis for students defining the importance of art, design and art education to themselves, assisting them in discovering the role of art in their own lives, and facilitating their choices of majors, concentrations, and minors.

MICA students are also required to take additional core courses in art history and language, literature, and culture.

Undergraduate students have the option to pursue a concentration in selected studio areas; each requires 15-18 credits in specified coursework, allowing students to expand the focus of their studies beyond their major. Students who desire a deeper liberal arts experience to complement their work in the studio can opt for a minor in literary studies, creative writing, gender studies, culture and politics, and critical theory.
