At the Fête of Lights: Bicentennial Gala, Aidan Leizerov ’28 (Interdisciplinary Sculpture BFA) wore their wax soldier costume created in the Mask and Headdress course taught by Valeska Populoh, faculty in the Fiber, Fashion, and Textile program. On the upper landing, Martin Knuppel ’26 (Illustration and Printmaking BFA) is dressed as a modern version of the First Lord of Baltimore. Leizerov and Knuppel were part of a larger student interpretation of the Main Building’s Maryland painting. Students created a living mural that was more representative of MICA's students today.

The work of Sam Weible '26 (LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA) addresses the mechanics of perception and attention. Drawing on minimalist traditions, studies of optic effects, and their lived experience with a nervous system condition to create paintings that bring heightened awareness to the mutability of sight. Through specificity of color and optic effects, their paintings slow down the viewer and call attention to how the act of viewing allows a work to act upon them.

“My MICA professors have asked me certain questions that challenge my perception. ‘What is my preferred personal future? Who am I making art for? How will I tackle an assignment that is representative of me?’ My responses to these questions show up as risky color choices and portals to worlds I one day hope to live and love in. Hopeful. My voice is hopeful.”

According to Taoist theory, the human body's energy system functions like a planetary system, circulating and sustaining both physical and mental well-being. This inner energy system is also connected to the cosmos, exchanging and communicating energy. This concept exists not only in Chinese culture but also in similar forms across different cultures worldwide. In my paintings, I incorporate four god symbols representing the four directions in Chinese astrology, soaring from afar and entering another dimension within the body of a sleeping giant.
