With a new leader of the Catholic Church, the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Washington, DC contacted Juan Bastos ’84 to paint Pope Leo XIV. The painting echoes Bastos’s Catholic upbringing and love of Renaissance composition while pulling in what he learned to see and create at MICA. He studied interviews and borrowed vestments to get the painting just right, and now the portrait hangs in a place of honor.
