In the Quiet Hours is an interactive, web-based data visualization project that explores how ideas begin forming during REM sleep, long before we’re aware of them. Created for parents of children ages 6–12, the project blends personal sleep data, population-level research, and neuroscience with calm, visual storytelling to make the science of creativity more understandable and human. It shows how sleep supports cognitive flexibility, and how that flexibility influences both the number of ideas we generate and how original they are. Rather than positioning sleep or creativity as things we can control, the project frames them as natural processes that can be supported through everyday behaviors like curiosity, reflection, and rest. The final experience invites parents to slow down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and feel more confident nurturing creativity in their children and in themselves.
