As the daughter of Department of Defense teachers, I spent nearly my entire life on U.S. military bases abroad in Germany, South Korea, and Italy—some of which no longer exist. This capstone explores nearly 1,800 closed military bases in over 100 countries, targeting urban planners, urban designers, and primary stakeholders in urban transformation projects. From Japan to Niger, creative adoptions of existing infrastructure help local communities utilize previously forbidden tracts of land. Through case studies, powerful visualizations, and a predictive model, I aim to inspire and educate with the possibilities a former base holds.
