The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship.
The Bridging Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity to study abroad in Japan in a credit-bearing semester or academic-year program. Each year, approximately 70-100 U.S. undergraduate students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need are selected as Bridging Scholars. In addition to receiving a cash stipend, Bridging Scholars participate in cohort programming designed to help students build a future as global citizens with a lifelong connection to Japan.
Bridging Scholars come to the program from disparate academic backgrounds and interests. Each class of scholars represents students from large public universities, small liberal arts colleges, and community colleges across the U.S. Eighty-two percent of past Bridging Scholars reported that their study abroad experience aided in their career and professional development; eighty percent of responding alumni report that they continue to communicate with their Japanese host family, friends, and professors, and fifty-seven percent are currently working in Japan or for a U.S.-Japan related organization.
Freeman-Asia accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying at the undergraduate level at a two-year or four-year college or university who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
The Rotary Club operates one of the largest and longest-run private study abroad funding programs offering up to $25,000 in scholarships to fund one year of academic study, room and board, and other associated expenses. Students are named Cultural Ambassadors and are expected to give presentations both on their home culture while abroad and on the culture of their study abroad destination upon returning home. Scholarships are given through local branches.
The Rachel Robinson International Fellowship (RRIF) specifically funds study abroad opportunities. The program focuses on students from underrepresented backgrounds, but recipients are not required to attend an HBCU to qualify.
The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. At Tortuga, our mission is to help travelers avoid the cost and hassle of checked luggage with carry-on-sized travel backpacks, including students studying abroad. When customers purchase luggage from us for their trips, they are “paying it forward” by funding scholarships for students like you.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a wide range of scholarships that support students, graduates, researchers, and faculty pursuing academic and professional opportunities in Germany. Funded primarily by the German government, DAAD programs promote international education and cultural exchange through study, research, internships, and language-learning opportunities. Scholarships vary by academic level and field and may provide support for tuition-related expenses, living costs, travel, and health insurance. DAAD funding offers students an excellent opportunity to gain international experience while studying or conducting research at leading German universities and institutions.
Stipends of $500 are available for those who successfully apply to become a Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador. The money is put towards a Spring or Fall semester volunteer, intern, teach, or study abroad program. Ambassadors are expected to blog about their experiences for the Diversity Abroad community with the aim of inspiring other members to travel.
