Ryan Woo is an adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) who specializes in building, configuring, and flying FPV (First Person View) drones for cinema. Ryan Woo ‘24 (Filmmaking MFA), originally from San Mateo in California’s Bay Area, has been studying cinema and filmmaking since 2016. He completed his BA at San Francisco State University in 2016 and his MFA at MICA in 2024. Some of his past works includes the documentary, Island Soul and other passion projects revolving around FPV drones. His next documentary film, Old Enough to Understand is set to premiere March of 2027. Over the last two and a half years, Ryan has built and configured over 8 quadcopters (more commonly known as “drone”) of various sizes and purposes. With surpassing 1,500 battery cycles flown and 250 hours of airborne FPV flight time along with over 10 years of filmmaking, he aims to combine both aspects together to promote a new format of filmmaking not commonly offered in university programs.
