This thesis show is inspired by a shift in my environment as a result of the pandemic that brought about long periods of depression which not only affected my lifestyle, but also my art practice as a whole. During these periods of time I strived to find motivation and inspiration to work. What I found comfort in were the five cats that we keep at home. Gus, Ada, Midnight, Cali, and Tabby. I spent most of my time around them and it was easier to enjoy making work when my cats were the focus. I’ve always had cats growing up and they have an irreplaceable position in my life. As time passed I kept going back to this place of comfort in my work and I wanted to find a way to portray this specific connection and experience.
Here are seven different works that begin to follow the process of trying to define Nadia, Gus, Ada, Midnight, Cali, and Tabby. This period of experimentation follows the “formula” of making work: Ideation, Prototype, and Exploration. Across several different mediums, I begin to study my cats and the symbiotic relationship that exists between us.
This project is in no way complete and I am continuously adding work that will help narrow down this portrayal I am looking for.
