The Low-Residency M.F.A. in Studio Art is designed for serious artists who want to develop a professional body of work in a low-residency program. The program selects students who can devote their summers to work and study at MICA while working independently during the academic year.
A portfolio exhibiting a level of mastery is the primary prerequisite for the M.F.A. Applicants must have at least 40 credits of studio work and 9 credits in art history and/or criticism.
Students considering the Summer M.F.A. program may also want to consider MICA's full-time M.F.A. programs including the Mount Royal School of Art, Rinehart School of Sculpture, Hoffberger School of Painting, or the M.F.A. in Photographic and Electronic Media.
Application Requirements & Procedures for the Studio Art Summer Low-Residency M.F.A.
1. GradCAS Application Form
MICA uses GradCAS, a centralized graduate application platform, to collect and manage applications. When you select the link below, you will be asked to create a GradCAS account or sign in before selecting your MICA program and beginning your application.

3. Statement of Purpose / Designer Statement
Applicants are asked to submit a written statement (500-700 words). The statement should directly reference the portfolio of artwork, as well as address the applicant's interest in low-residency graduate study.
4. Two (2) Letters of Reference

Digital transcripts from the last degree-granting institution can be uploaded to GradCAS. Official transcripts are not required for the initial review process, however, the Graduate Review Committee may request additional or official documentation before decision notification.
6. Portfolio of Artwork
Applicants should submit 18-20 digital images or time-based media for review online.
7. $75 Application Fee
Payable via credit card during the application submission stage online.
8. Additional Requirements for International Applicants
International candidates whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English. Additionally, certified translations of all letters of reference, transcripts and school documentation must be provided.
