Statement
HAVEN (Housing Adaptation and Valuation Equity Navigator) is an app developed by Paul Papagiannis that offers users a financial planning experience through the lens of climate vulnerability. As part of his Master of UX Design Capstone Project, HAVEN utilizes climate data and potential loss of home equity to connect climate risk to home ownership. Using this information, HAVEN allows users to evaluate stay vs leave scenarios. It also helps create a personalized savings plan, enabling homeowners to proactively determine the actions they want to take regarding their home and finances.
The core philosophy behind HAVEN states that “climate adaptation is a financial right, not a privilege,” and it was created to address a gap identified in research. Homeowners are aware of climate change; however, they do not have access to tools that enable them to convert that awareness into financial action. Insurance instability is one of many factors that lead individuals to become aware of the relationship between climate and finance.
