All students take academic classes alongside their studio art courses. Students can expect to take 1/3 academic coursework and 2/3 art courses.
There are no entrance exams for class placement.
MICA accepts Advanced Placement courses for credit from students who successfully pass the College Board AP Examination with scores of 4 or better; a 5 or better is required for the Drawing portfolio exam. Transfer is contingent upon applicability to degree requirements; credit will not be awarded in excess of degree requirements. A maximum of 15 credits may be awarded in combination with Dual Enrollment, International Baccalaureate and international subject-based assessments.
Students who have completed the IB Diploma or the individual examinations may be eligible for credit if they earn a score of 6 or 7 on the higher-level examinations. Depending on the exam, credit is awarded as Humanistic Studies or Math/Science Elective. No credit will be awarded for the Art/Design Elective. A maximum of 15 credits may be awarded in combination with Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment.

Majors are usually confirmed by March 1st, prior to their registration for the fall term. Students may remain undeclared until the second semester of their sophomore year, however, doing so may extend the date of their graduation.

Yes, MICA guarantees on-campus housing for first-year international students who submit their housing applications by the deadline. The process is the same as for domestic students, with additional support available through the Office of International Education.
MICA offers an International Student Orientation, which includes cultural adjustment workshops, housing guidance, and information about campus resources. Additionally, support is available through Residential Advisors (RAs) for cultural and language challenges with roommates.

Yes, international students can request housing during breaks for an additional fee and can also access affordable storage solutions for their belongings through MICA’s partnerships with local storage companies.
MICA’s campus is secure with 24/7 security and card-access for residence halls. International students are provided with emergency contact information during orientation and are encouraged to download safety apps like LiveSafe and Rave Guardian for additional security.
Campus Safety officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Security guards and student monitors at Campus Safety desks near the entrances of most academic buildings are the eyes and ears of MICA.
