Making America Again: So Strong, So Brave, So True

MICA presents Making America Again: So Strong, So Brave, So True, an exhibition highlighting artists whose work reflects the lasting impact of the Ford/Philip Morris Foundation Fellows for Artists of Color, a national initiative launched by MICA that operated from 1985 to 1999. Funded by the Ford Foundation and the Philip Morris Foundation, the program expanded to four other independent art colleges and helped 200 artists of color earn Master of Fine Arts degrees, mentorship, and professional training. Guest curators are Leslie King Hammond, PhD, MICA graduate dean emerita and founder of the former Center for Race and Culture, and Lowery Stokes Sims, PhD, who previously received an honorary degree from MICA and currently serves as an independent curator, art historian, and curator emerita of the Museum of Arts and Design. The exhibition runs through September 29, 2026, in the Sheila & Richard Riggs Gallery at the Fred Lazarus IV Center.

Devoted to Painting: An Exhibition 20 Years in the Making

As a part of the Bicentennial Celebration, MICA brings together the work of 29 women artists who have made lasting connections with the school and its community. Open August 28–October 11, 2026, DEVOTED: 20 Years of The McMillan-Stewart Endowed Chair in Painting will feature original artworks with a diverse and intergenerational roster, including science fiction multi-media artist Saya Woolfalk; painter and photographer Jane Dickson; and nationally renowned portraitist Amy Sherald ’04 (LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA). Presented in MICA’s Decker Gallery, located in the Fox Building, DEVOTED celebrates the open, unstinting exchanges fostered by the chairship.
