Twenty five years ago, in July 1998, the United States Postal Service (USPS) issued the Breast Cancer Research stamp, the first such fundraising stamp of its kind. With an illustration of the mythical "goddess of the hunt" by Illustration Practice MFA Founding Director Whitney Sherman ’71 (Photography BFA) and art directed by Ethel Kessler ’71 (Visual Communications), the stamp is the longest running postal issue in U.S. history and one of the most recognizable images of the last quarter century.
The stamp, whose dramatic design features the phrases "Fund the Fight" and "Find a Cure," is priced higher than standard first-class letter rate, with the surplus collected by the USPS for breast cancer research. Reissued multiple times since its launch, it remains popular today, selling over 1 billion stamps and raising over $95 million for breast cancer research.
Kessler continues to art direct for the USPS, and since the 1990s, she has led the creation of hundreds of stamps. Her most recent work honors author Toni Morrison and the late supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for the 2023 stamp program.
