The Staff Advisory Assembly (Staff Assembly) serves in an advisory role to the President of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Its primary purpose is to provide a forum for issues that matter to staff and to support open communication between staff and the President. Through meetings and discussion, the Staff Assembly helps ensure that staff perspectives are shared and considered in matters affecting the campus community.
Membership in the Staff Assembly includes all eligible MICA staff—both full-time and part-time, including temporary or casual employees—below the level of Executive Director. While all staff may participate in Assembly meetings, staff who are part of a collective bargaining unit must address negotiation matters through the collective bargaining process rather than through the Assembly. When active bargaining is taking place, those staff members are not permitted to attend Staff Assembly meetings, and the Staff Assembly Leadership Committee (SLC) is responsible for ensuring that these guidelines are followed.
The Staff Assembly facilitates information sharing to improve staff understanding of institutional activities, policies, and decisions that affect the campus environment. It also represents staff interests by meeting with the President, recommending staff for committees and task forces, and promoting communication and collaboration among staff, faculty, and students. Additionally, the Assembly works with the President to support professional growth for staff not covered by collective bargaining agreements and oversees staff-focused initiatives through committees such as the Staff Exhibition Committee, Staff Event Committee, and Staff Professional Development Committee. The Assembly does not function as a union representative, grievance body, or formal negotiating or decision-making entity.
