The Faculty Handbook is part of the legal contract between the Faculty and the College, and is
mutually binding on both parties. The Faculty Handbook is intended to provide information on
personnel and contractual policies, academic governance, committee structures, and Faculty and
College rights and responsibilities. All amendments are subject to the approval of the Trustees. In
carrying out the policies and procedures of the Faculty Handbook, questions regarding interpretation
may arise from time to time. When this occurs, either a member of the administration or a member of
the Faculty Executive Committee may take the question to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and
Provost. If the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Faculty Executive
Committee are unable to resolve the issue, it will then be taken to the President for discussion with the
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Executive Committee, and the final
interpretation will be made by the President.
The Faculty Handbook, of course, does not anticipate all situations that could conceivably arise,
nor is it meant to do so. From time to time, situations may arise that are not anticipated and may
require exceptions to existing policy and procedures. All actions by faculty or administration that are not
consistent with the policies and procedures set forth in the Handbook should be made known in writing
to the Faculty Executive Committee and the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. If either
objects to the action taken, the matter will be brought to the President for discussion with both parties.
Exceptions must have the approval of the President and the Faculty Executive Committee.
