Summer 2021 Open Studies Programming Updates: as of April 5, 2021

The office of Open Studies administers a broad range of academic programs. The programs listed below will be running during the May 2021 through July 2021 time frame:

- Young People’s Studios (YPS)
- Pre-College Art and Design Program 
- Community Education and Professional Practice
- MA/MBA in Design Leadership [updated on April 5, 2021]
- All MPS Programs (Business of Art and Design, Data Analytics and Visualization, and UX Design)

At this time, students enrolled or planning to enroll in these programs should expect to participate remotely with no access to the MICA campus.

Where will the classes be held?

All YPS Summer Art Camp classes will be held via zoom. Students will utilize the same zoom link for each class. 

When will registration open?

YPS Summer Art Camp registrations opened on March 1. Visit mica.edu/artcamp to learn more.

What is a session?

A session consists of two weeks of classes, held Monday - Friday. Each session provides a morning or afternoon class option.

How will I access the software needed for the class?

Once enrolled, you will receive a MICA email with a link to your Getting Started Guide. Please check the email that you used to register for the class.

 

This email will also include login instructions to access tools and software necessary for your course such as: Canvas, Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom, and Google Drive.

 

How will I interact with classmates?

Classes will be held synchronously via zoom, where peer and instructor discussions and critiques will be conducted.

Will I be on zoom the entire time?

Class format and “zoom time” will be structured to accommodate the needs of each class. 

 

How will I get my materials kit? 

Students registered and enrolled in a YPS class will receive a materials kit in the mail. Material kits will ship 1 to 2 weeks before the start of each YPS session. 

Will financial assistance or payment plans be available for online courses? How will the cost change and refunds work?

Payment plans are available for remote learning courses. If you are interested in setting up a payment plan, contact the Office of Open Studies for more information: openstudies@mica.edu or 410-225-2219

We are evaluating our current program budget and fees associated with attendance. We will have more information about any changes to fees by mid-May.

I’m not sure if I will like taking a course online. Could I try it out and get a refund if I don’t end up liking it?

You may request a full refund before the start of the third class, if you are not satisfied with the course offering. Submit a written request to openstudies@mica.edu including your full name and course information.

What are the dates for Summer 2021 Pre-College? 

July 2, 2021 - July 31, 2021


Where can I view a sample schedule of the Pre-College experience?

Visit mica.edu/precollege 

Will students receive college credit? 

Yes. Credits will still be accepted by MICA Undergraduate studies.


What time zone will classes be held?

All course times will be held during Eastern Standard Time (EST). 

When do applications close?

The deadline to submit applications for Pre-College is April 30, 2021.

What forms do I need to turn in, if any? 

If you have applied to Pre-College, please check your email to review the Updated Information and Forms packet. You will only need to submit the Updated Rules and Responsibilities Contract and payment, and can disregard all previous forms requested. 

What if I already turned in my completed forms, will I still need to submit an Updated Rules and Responsibilities Contract?
Yes, we need a new signed contract that confirms both student and family agreement with the updated policies that now include remote learning expectations.

I’m not sure if I will like taking a course online. Could I try it out and get a refund if I don’t end up liking it?

I am registering for a Community Education course. How will I get my materials?

A materials list is included in the Student Welcome Guide (PDF) once a student is registered and enrolled in the course. Materials will also be available to purchase online through the MICA Art Store at https://shop.mica.edu/art-supplies/.

 

I see this course is for credit. What’s this for?

Students enrolled in this course also receive credits. Teachers may apply this credit towards renewals of certifications.

When/where my residency will be held?

UXD Cohort 8 Students, DAV Cohort 10 Students, and BAD Cohort 11 Students: your residency will take place June 25-27, and will be held remotely.
