FAQ: Summer 2020 Programming

Below you will find common questions related to the Office of Open Studies Summer 2020 Programming.

After a review of MICA's capacity to host on-campus, in-person activities it has been determined that a return to regular on-campus programming is impossible at this time.  Consequently, MICA is suspending on-campus programming for the entire summer of 2020.

We understand our role is to be a resource for you, as a provider of academically rigorous and community focused curriculum.  We remain committed to delivering a quality learning experience for summer 2020, but now at a distance.

On May 15, 2020, we finalized the remote learning opportunities for our course offerings in the following programs:

When will the Summer Undergraduate schedule be available/what courses will be running?

Will I be able to get credit towards my degree for online Summer Undergraduate Courses?

Yes, you will be able to receive credit once you have completed all assignments for a Summer Undergraduate course 

What is going to happen with Summer YPS courses? Will they be online? How will that work?

Summer YPS courses were finalized on May 15. Our goal is to shift as many courses to a remote offering, while maintaining the quality and rigor of the course. 

I submitted a YPS scholarship application for the summer. When will I be notified?
YPS Scholarship notifications will go out by May 22.

When will Summer programming be finalized?

Will financial assistance or payment plans be available for online courses? How will the cost change and refunds work?

Payment plans are available for remote learning courses. If you are interested in setting up a payment plan, contact the Office of Open Studies for more information: openstudies@mica.edu or 410-225-2219.


What is the new pricing?
We have recalibrated the cost of courses to acknowledge that instructional supplies and facilities access are not included this year (families will receive materials lists in advance of classes).
The new price for each YPS Summer Art Camp session is as follows:
- Early & Late sessions: $310 (previously $385)

- Session 1 & 3: $310 (previously $385)

- Session 2: $275 (previously $346)

I’m not sure if I will like taking a course online. Could I try it out and get a refund if I don’t end up liking it?

You may request a full refund before the start of the third class, if you are not satisfied with the course offering. Submit a written request to openstudies@mica.edu including your full name and course information.

How will remote learning be implemented for the Pre-College program? Will there still be a two week, three week, or five week session?

The program will still include three credit bearing options:

5-Week Program (combine the two sessions below): earn 3 credits [Dates: June 20 - July 25, 2020]

3-Week Session: earn 2 credits [Dates: July 5 - July 25, 2020]

2-Week Session: earn 1 credit [Dates: June 20 - July 4, 2020]

Will the credits still be accepted by MICA Undergraduate studies? 
Yes. Credits will still be accepted by MICA Undergraduate studies.

What will the price difference be?

We have a new price structure for the Pre-College program which removes major expenses we incur when students are on campus, including meals and housing. The new price for each Pre-College session is as follows:

 

5-week: $4480 (previously $6400)

3-week: $2900 (previously $4110)

2-week: $1995 (previously $2850)

What will the remote course offerings look like?
With the move to a remote version of the Pre-College Art and Design Residency program, focus is on academic rigor and personal creative growth, and a college level curriculum (college credit is earned for each session). Details of the move to remote learning are here.

At that time you can expect to hear more about how:
- MICA will provide a high quality teaching and learning experience.
- How the tools of teaching, learning, and making will differ from our on campus experience.

- How students will use these tools and grow academically

- How we will support independent studio work hours.
- How students will access MICA academic resources remotely MICA will provide access to our admissions team and scholarship opportunities.

MICA will provide valuable co and extra-curricular experiences that are educationally enriching and build community and connection among program students.


I live in a different time zone than EST, when do I need to login for and attend class?

All course times will be held during Eastern Standard Time (EST). If you will be taking classes outside of the EST zone, you will have to adjust accordingly.


When is the deadline to submit final payments?
We have extended the deadline to submit final payments to June 1.

What if I already set up a payment plan for the old tuition amount?

You can adjust your payment plan amount by logging into your account at micaprecollege.afford.com or by calling 1(800) 722-4867.


What forms do I need to turn in, if any? 

If you have applied to Pre-College, please check your email to review the Updated Information and Forms packet. You will only need to submit the Updated Rules and Responsibilities Contract and payment, and can disregard all previous forms requested. 


What if I already turned in my completed forms, will I still need to submit an Updated Rules and Responsibilities Contract?
Yes, we need a new signed contract that confirms both student and family agreement with the updated policies that now include remote learning expectations.


I’m not sure if I will like taking a course online. Could I try it out and get a refund if I don’t end up liking it?

If I have already paid for a Community Education or Professional Practice summer course that was based on campus, is there any difference in cost now that the classes will be online?

We are evaluating our current program budget and fees associated with attendance. The finalized list of remote course offerings is located at mica.edu/summer20.

Can I use tuition remission for summer online courses?

If you are a full-time MICA employee, please contact HR for more information: humanresources@mica.edu

The ISCOP program for 2020 has been cancelled as of April 17, 2020 due to COVID-19. Please know that this decision was made after much thought and deliberation and that our highest priority is to protect your safety and welfare. Factors, such as CDC and Department of State travel advisories, the WHO declaring a pandemic and the US declaration of a national emergency, combined with MICA policy and emergency risk management protocol all weighed into this determination. MICA hopes to resume the ISCOP program in Summer 2021. If you have any questions, reach out to the Office of Open Studies.

All of our 2020 Summer Travel Intensive programs have been canceled due to COVID-19. Please know that this decision was made after much thought and deliberation and that our highest priority is to protect your safety and welfare. Factors, such as CDC and Department of State travel advisories, the WHO declaring a pandemic and the US declaration of a national emergency, combined with MICA policy and emergency risk management protocol all weighed into this determination.
