Spring 2021 Open Studies Programming Updates: as of Dec. 8, 2020

The office of Open Studies administers a broad range of academic programs. The programs listed below will be running during the January through May 2021 time frame:

1. Art and Design College Accelerator Program (ADCAP)
2. Community Education and Professional Practice
3. MA/MBA in Design Leadership
4. All MPS Programs (Business of Art and Design, Data Analytics and Visualization, and UX Design)
5. Young People’s Studios (YPS)

At this time, students enrolled or planning to enroll in these programs should expect to participate remotely with no access to the MICA campus.

How will I access the software needed for the class?

Students who participate in ADCAP will have access to the necessary software for their class prior to the start of class. Please contact the ADCAP Program Coordinator for more details: adcap@mica.edu  

 

 Software for your course may include: Canvas, Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom, and Google Drive.

How will I interact with classmates?

Classes will be held synchronously via zoom, where peer and instructor discussions and critiques will be conducted.

What time zone are the courses held? 

 All classes are scheduled for an EST time zone.

 

Will I be on zoom the entire time?

Class format and “zoom time” will be structured to accommodate the needs of each class. 

 

How will I get my materials? 

Students who participate in ADCAP receive materials prior to the start of class. Please contact the ADCAP Program Coordinator for more details: adcap@mica.edu

I am registering for a Community Education course. How will I get my materials?

A materials list is included in the Student Welcome Guide (PDF) once a student is registered and enrolled in the course. Materials will also be available to purchase online through the MICA Art Store at https://shop.mica.edu/art-supplies/.

 

I see this course is for credit. What’s this for?

Students enrolled in this course also receive credits. Teachers may apply this credit towards renewals of certifications.

I’m not sure if I will like taking a course online. Could I try it out and get a refund if I don’t end up liking it?

You may request a full refund before the start of the third class, if you are not satisfied with the course offering. Submit a written request to openstudies@mica.edu including your full name and course information.

When/where my residency will be held?

UXD Cohort 7 Students: your residency will be held virtually March 12-14. 

UXD Cohort 8 Students, DAV Cohort 10 Students, and BAD Cohort 11 Students: your residency will take place June 25-27. 

Whether the June residency will take place in person or virtually is still to be determined, based on changing guidelines and forecasting.

 

 

When will YPS Spring 2021 begin and end?
YPS Spring 2021 Saturday classes will be held remotely. Classes start January 30 and end on April 3, with no classes being held on March 27. Morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) class options will be available. 

AM Classes: 9:30 am - 12 pm (EST)

PM Classes: 1 pm - 3:30 pm (EST)

I am a YPS student. How will I get my materials? 
Students registered and enrolled in YPS will receive materials kits in the mail (to the shipping address the student used to register). Kits begin shipping the week of January 15th to domestic students. Please understand that the mail may be delayed due to Covid-19 related issues, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get you materials. We recommend early registration for this reason. Please note, material kits cannot be mailed to international addresses.

Are there scholarships available for YPS students?
The scholarship deadline for Spring classes is on January 1. Please visit mica.edu/ypsscholarship for more information and to submit your application.
