MICA offers a variety of funding to full-time faculty, part-time faculty, students, and staff that can help initiate or complete projects, advance skills towards teaching, and share research or creative work.

Awards offered through the Baltimore Engagement Grant, Community Engagement Grant, Lucas Grant, Brenner Grant, and the Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Fund are intended to promote individual and community research projects and activities.

The Fall 2025 Adjunct Fund Application Deadline is Friday, November 7, 2025 at 5 PM.

On behalf of the Provost and the Grants Committee, we invite you to apply the Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Fund grant. The Adjunct Faculty Grants support activities and resources that contribute to adjunct faculty members’ professional, creative, or scholarly research and development. The Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Fund was established specifically for adjunct faculty as part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between MICA and SEIU Local 500.

Professional development funds can be used for, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Costs associated with the fabrication of one’s work, such as materials.
  • Costs associated with publications, exhibitions, or other forms of public dissemination of one’s research, creative work, professional or pedagogical practice.
  • The full purchase price of software or equipment up to, but not exceeding, $1,000 after taxes and fees.
  • Conference attendance to present one’s research, scholarship, creative or teaching practice.
  • Travel and related costs to support giving public speeches and presentations such as keynotes, lectures, or talks, related to one’s research, scholarship, creative or teaching practice.
  • Costs associated with copyright and image rights for publication.
  • Costs to support research or learning opportunities that advance one’s scholarship, creative practice, or teaching such as workshops, colloquia, or residencies related to one’s research, scholarship, or creative practice.
  • Pay businesses for their services towards the execution of a project/activity.

The Fall 2025 Brenner Fund Application Deadline is Friday, November 7, 2025 at 5 PM.

On behalf of the Provost and the Grants Committee, we invite you to apply for the Marcella Brenner Grants for Faculty Development and Research. Marcella Brenner Grants fund projects that contribute to the faculty member's professional, creative, or scholarly research and development. 

Brenner Grants can be used for, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Costs associated with the fabrication of one’s work, such as materials.

The Fall 2025 Lucas Grant Application Deadline is Friday, November 7, 2025 at 5 PM.

On behalf of the Provost and the Grants Committee, we invite you to apply Lucas Grant for Faculty Teaching and Curriculum Development. Lucas Grants are intended to fund projects that directly contribute to the improvement of curriculum and teaching at MICA.

Lucas Grants may be used for, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Conference attendance and involvement, including presentation of a paper about coursework, academic programming, or course project activity; chairing a conference panel about curriculum or teaching, et cetera

  • Training/workshops for new technical skills or new technology the faculty plans to integrate into teaching

  • Training for assessment or participation in assessment conferences and workshops

  • Training for faculty to learn approaches to address and integrate diversity and inclusion into the classroom and teaching (such as training for faculty to work more effectively with English Language Learners in their classrooms)

  • The full purchase price of software or equipment up to, but not exceeding, $2,000 after taxes and fees.

  • Pay businesses for their services towards the improvement of curriculum and teaching (e.g. hiring an industry consultant to provide specialized training on a new piece of machinery or software)

The Fall 2025 Baltimore Engagement Application Deadline is Friday, November 7, 2025 at 5 PM.

The Baltimore Engagement Grant offers support for faculty to innovate within the curriculum while contributing to the greater knowledge and understanding of the Baltimore community. This funding is to enrich hands-on learning and is intended for opportunities inside credit-bearing courses that provide students with real-world experiences that they would otherwise miss within the confines of the classroom.

The Community Engagement Grant fund community-based art and/or design projects that emerge from a compelling community-identified need. Collaborative projects between partner organizations and MICA affiliates that are located in Baltimore City are strongly preferred.

This grant program is not accepting applications at this time.

The Grant for Faculty Research and Creative Development provides funding up to $5,000 to help faculty initiate significant projects or advance larger-scale creative, academic, and scholarly projects.

This grant invites applications for:

-funding towards research expenses, such as materials or travel, up to $5,000

-time in the form of a course substitution to undertake work for a significant project.

The Ratcliffe Center for Creative Entrepreneurship (RCCE) Faculty Teaching Grants provides up to $1,200 in funding to support courses that infuse entrepreneurial concepts into curriculum and teaching at MICA.

The Research Initiation Grants and Cultural Expansion Grants are on hold at this time.

The Stanley Rosen Faculty Development Endowment in 1998 with a gift from Madalyn Rosen through the Rosen-Gold Family Philanthropic Fund in memory of Madalyn's husband, Stanley Rosen.

This grant of $500 is awarded annually to a deserving faculty member who is identified by the Grants Committee from their review of the spring applications for the Brenner Grants for Faculty Development & Research.

This grant program is not accepting applications at this time.

The Y.L. Hoi Memorial Award supports students as creative agents of change in Baltimore City. Students developing projects that use art and design practice and thinking to create a new paradigm for equal opportunity for all may apply. Proposed projects should:

  • Promote access to opportunity for all, regardless of race, class, or creed;
  • Incorporate art and design practice and thinking;
  • Be designed and implemented in partnership with Baltimore community organizations or groups serving Baltimore neighborhoods and;
  • Leverage the strengths of MICA (e.g., other students, programs, initiatives, alumni, network, etc.)

Awarded projects should be a catalyst for Baltimore City communities - raising awareness, empowering individuals, and fostering positive change. Undergraduate and graduate students of all artistic approaches, mediums, and disciplines are welcome to apply.

Applicants may apply for up to $5,000 in funding for such expenses as materials, supplies, entrance fees, and transportation that are integral to the development or implementation of qualifying projects. Grantees may apply for funding to compensate commissioned artists or guest speakers participating in projects.

As a successful self-made businessman in the Chinese furniture, arts and crafts trade, Y.L. Hoi worked to connect quality products to an international consumer base. Through his keen business sense and ingenuity, combined with an openness to new partnerships and international expansion, Y.L. Hoi developed a highly successful business that endured over five decades.

For his family, his vision extended beyond his home in mainland China and Hong Kong, to provide his descendants with opportunities to develop and learn beyond their country of origin. At the same time, he firmly believed that civic and educational engagement began at home. Recognizing that education and philanthropy are the cornerstones of community Hoi and his wife decided to bequeath most of his estate to universities and charities in Hong Kong. Y.L. Hoi embodied the principles of inclusion and access to opportunity for all, regardless of race, class, or creed.
