Betsy Johnson, Juror

"It's 2019 and sometimes it seems like the world is on fire. International news reports tell of unprecedented climate change, widespread political unrest, entrenched discrimination, and a global refugee and migrant crisis. Deciding where to place one's energy and resources can be overwhelming in the face of so much need. But people are still making art. Through art we process experiences, share our truths, and imagine the world we want to live in. The work in this exhibition is created by your colleagues, neighbors, administrators, and friends. Here you can catch a glimpse of what MICA is made of."

Betsy Johnson is a specialist in contemporary art and theory with expertise in curatorial practice, community engagement, museum education, and public programming. She earned a Master of Arts in Art History from The Pennsylvania State University and is ABD in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Maryland. As an independent curator, she has organized exhibitions for the Washington Project for the Arts, the McLean Project for the Arts, the Arlington Arts Center, Metro Micro Gallery, WAS Gallery, and The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland, College Park, among others. From 2013 to 2015 she led the development of the visitor experience and education programs at Glenstone in Potomac, Maryland. Currently she is an Assistant Curator at the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

This exhibition showcases a wide range of artwork created by MICA staff members, ranging from drawing and painting to sculpture, photography, video, ceramics, and fiber. The exhibition will be on view from Friday, January 18 through Sunday, February 10.

There is no cost to attend.
