The exhibition by Arista Wilson will be on view from September 13 - October 8 in the Gateway Gallery. Wilson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Virginia and Maryland. She is currently a BFA candidate for Ceramics and Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Exhibition Statement: I am drawn to the warm light that dapples a forest and makes the wildest underbrush appear comforting. Connecting the warmth of nature to domestic comfort is what draws me to the vessel. A cup can be filled with water or wildflowers, or something less tangible like love, light, happiness, and comfort. By painting within the confines of a vessel silhouette on a canvas, I fill the vessel, a domestic object, with the warm light and colors of nature. By painting a forest, garden, or patch of soft grass on the exterior of a functional vessel, nature acts as the vessel for comfort rather than existing within it. This reversal of roles, and transferring of an image between a two-dimensional and three-dimensional space, is part of my journey to understand how light, warmth, and comfort exist in our world. This is a Student Space Gallery exhibition. For more information about the SSG program and how to apply for a solo-exhibition, please visit mica.edu/ssg.
