Join the Sculptural Studies Junior Seminar class for a lecture by visiting artist Chiara No. Monday, March 9th, 4:15pm Station 104 Stay for the Junior Seminar opening reception in the Middendorf Gallery next door! Chiara No graduated from Towson University in Art History in 2004. Though she didn’t pursue visual art til years later, her training in art history—developing theses, interrogating sources, and tracing primary references—has shaped her approach to making. She earned her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015, drawn to courses in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and literature to expand her conceptual framework. Her practice shifted toward reading and writing, which led to the creation of an Instagram persona in 2016. Through this account, she treated her reading as sound bites to expose double-speak through still images, video and captions. In 2019, Chiara moved to Vermont, where she had the space to translate years of research—ranging from religious esoterica to cultural sub-histories—into physical work. This has culminated in her current body of work, Demons Are Other People. This lecture is supported by the BLOCK visiting artist fund.
