MICA alumni use their vision and skills across industries and are powering the creative economy around the world. They are exhibiting artists, app developers, e-textile designers, museum educators, best-selling graphic novel authors, and so much more.
MICA is home to the Ratcliffe Center for Creative Entrepreneurship, a hub dedicated to helping the College's students and alumni become successful business owners. Made possible with a $5 million gift from the Phillip E. and Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation, the Center addresses the evolving needs of artists and designers in the new creative economy. Its activities include curricular, co-curricular, and competition showcases.
The UP/Start Venture Competition, which awards over $100k in seed funding annually, focuses on incubating and building creative business ventures within the MICA community. Working with industry partners, UP/Start provides mentorship and capital to help nurture ideas into sustainable businesses.
This unique curricular offering provides students across majors a framework in which to deepen their creative, critical thinking and business skills so they will be equipped to create change in the world as an artist, designer, business owner, and/or community organizer.
This year-long program for incoming first-year students is focused on integrating studio research with emergent technologies, project-based learning, professional practice, and financial literacy. First Year Fellows explore the entrepreneurial mindset and gain the knowledge and skills to propel their college studies and prepare for a wide range of creative professional careers that support a purposeful and successful life.
The Internship Fellowship in Creative Entrepreneurship program provides MICA students the opportunity to participate in a valuable summer business internship experience. The fellowships of up to $3,000 will be awarded to deserving students who have demonstrated interest in creative entrepreneurship and have secured an internship offer from a potential employer.
Working with partners in Baltimore and beyond, and catalyzed by MICA, the Baltimore Creatives Accelleration Network (B/CAN) offers holistic business, marketing, legal, and financial training, as well as tools and resources, to creative entrepreneurs ranging from individual artists looking to sustain their practice to creative startup companies looking to revolutionize their industry.
