TEST Instructional Technology Support for Faculty

Faculty are working this summer to redesign their syllabi and their teaching plans for fall to adapt them to the need for a mix of course delivery models including online/remote, hybrid and modified in-person.

In this work, faculty are focused on continuing to provide a rich array of educational experiences, characterized by the high-level of quality and community that is associated with a MICA education, while at the same time making necessary adjustments to how we engage with each other in order to accommodate health and safety needs in this extraordinary time.

Center for Teaching Innovation & Exchange (C/TIE)

Faculty are supported in their course redesign by the Center for Teaching Innovation & Exchange (C/TIE) which includes MICA’s educational technology support. C/TIE’s mission to: “support dynamic teaching at MICA. We provide training and resources that promote a lively exchange of ideas concerning equitable and engaged pedagogy. Through our activities, we make teaching and learning practices more accessible, collaborative, and responsive to the unique needs of postsecondary art & design education in the 21st century” is particularly resonant at this moment in time. Each curricular area has a C/TIE liaison that they can use as a primary point of contact for small group or individual consultations.

C/TIE can be contacted at: CTIE@mica.edu

 Course Redesign and Faculty Workshops

Faculty have access to a curated set of materials to assist them in their course redesign via MICA’s Resource Guide to Teaching Online which was delivered as a Canvas course in late May. To support faculty who want a more interactive experience to supplement their learning from the Resource Guide to Teaching Online, numerous professional development opportunities have been developed and scheduled for June, July, and August. Workshops include sessions on the use of Canvas and Zoom; media development and video editing; accessibility in online courses; managing the online classroom; community-based learning in the online environment; trauma-informed pedagogy; and whiteness at work. In addition to structured workshops, faculty have been invited to participate in affinity groups to share their strategies for using Canvas; engaging students when teaching online; teaching studio in a physically-distanced environment; and trauma-informed pedagogy and incorporating BLM into their syllabi.

Questions about faculty development opportunities can be sent to: CTIE@mica.edu

 Centrally-Supported Applications

Teaching and learning at MICA is supported by the Canvas learning management system and Google Apps for Education To specifically support distance learning in the fall, all MICA faculty will be provisioned with a Zoom Pro account on or around August 1st.

 Decker Library

The Decker Library’s electronic resources have remained available to faculty throughout the campus’s closure. Librarians have also been available to assist faculty in identifying new or different material to include in their syllabi. When the campus opens, the Decker Library will reopen for pick-up and drop-off only. The breadth of circulating materials will be expanded to include things such as periodicals. Access to special collection items that cannot be circulated will be available by appointment.
