Stephanie Garmey

Part-Time Faculty / General Fine Arts & Drawing

Stephanie Garmey earned her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Hoffberger School of Painting in 1995, where she studied with Grace Hartigan. She previously received an MA in Painting from Purdue University in Indiana (1985) and a BFA in General Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art (1983).

 

Garmey’s artwork draws inspiration from her collection of natural objects, materials, and taxidermy animals. Her contemplations on nature take form through a wide range of media, including constructions and installations, book arts, painting, cut paper, embroidery, encaustic, wood, glass, drawing, and light.

 

She has received Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council in both Crafts and Painting, as well as a painting grant from the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Arts and Culture. Garmey has also participated in several artist residencies, including Atelier Artist in Residence in France, the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency Program in Rochefort-en-Terre, Brittany, France, and the Vermont Studio Center.

 

Her work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Notable venues include the Garrison Art Center (Garrison, NY), Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati, OH), Hillyer Gallery (Washington, DC), The Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE), VisArts (Rockville, MD), the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD), Stevenson University (Baltimore, MD), Towson University’s Center for the Arts Gallery (Towson, MD), and Loyola College (Baltimore, MD).
