Growing up on a farm on Maui, Caleb O’Connor ’02 (Painting BFA) learned early to observe the rhythms of nature and the nuances of human connection, lessons that continue to shape his work as a painter and sculptor. Known for detailed figurative realism, O’Connor creates works that blur the line between the possible and dreamlike, earning his art the description of “magic realism.”

At MICA, O’Connor received the Painting Department Award in 1999 and the Morris Louis 32 Scholarship in 2000. During his junior year, he mounted his first gallery exhibition at Gallery K in Washington, D.C., launching a career marked by national and international exhibitions.

After graduation, O’Connor taught at the Delaware College of Art and Design before receiving a Fulbright Grant to study in Italy from 2002–2003. Living in Pietrasanta, a center for marble and bronze sculpture, he immersed himself in carving and casting, an experience that expanded his artistic language across two- and three-dimensional forms.

Today, O’Connor’s paintings and sculptures are known for emotional depth, meticulous craftsmanship, and cinematic storytelling. His figures, often set in tropical landscapes inspired by Hawaii, capture moments of solitude, wonder, and human interaction.

After returning to Maui, he created landscapes tracing the journey from Makawao through Kula to Haleakala Crater. Later, while living in Alabama, he completed a three-year commission for the Tuscaloosa Federal Building and Courthouse, producing large-scale historical paintings.

In recent years, O’Connor has increasingly focused on public art, believing art can strengthen communities, beautify environments, and support well-being. Becoming a father has also brought renewed energy and perspective to his work, deepening his exploration of humanity, connection, and place.
