Pathways at MICA & Beyond: Zoë Soriano ’18

“I went to MICA thinking I’d just learn how to animate Disney-esque characters, and left MICA with an incredible new group of friends and colleagues, a diverse portfolio of work, and my eyes set on a new pathway in the animation field. Going into MICA, I was a bit closed-minded about what animation was and what the possibilities were with a career in animation. I believed that I had to work at Disney or Pixar to be successful.”

“As I progressed through the animation curriculum, I discovered that there were many types of animation and I truly fell in love with getting nerdy and technical in After Effects.

This led me down a path towards learning more about motion graphics; which led to securing an internship at Discovery during the summer after my junior year at MICA.”

“One of the best things that came out of my time at MICA was getting to connect with not only the other students, but the professors as well. During my senior year, one of my teachers, Ryan Thurber, was able to connect me to a local studio, Franc, where I was able to secure my first full-time job in animation.”

“This experience ultimately led me to my current path as a Freelance Motion Designer + Art Director, where I continue to work alongside other MICA Alumni at different studios and agencies around the US. I am so grateful for everyone that I’ve met during my time at MICA; the friendships + connections I made are so invaluable to me.”
