Marc Handelman (b. 1975) is a visual artist and teacher based in Brooklyn, New York. Handelman’s works explore the afterlives of the genre of landscape, often where they intersect with the ideological legacies of American Landscape painting. Their work has drawn from sources and research from art history, colonial archives, imperial botany, and contemporary image culture to consider questions of who and what belongs, what is native or invasive, and who or what is deemed naturalized or deviant in the violent grammar and hierarchies of social, legal and political life. Handelman is an Associate Professor at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
