Jyoti Mohan

Part-Time Faculty, Studio and Humanistic Studies

Jyoti is a history nerd and social justice warrior! Currently engaged in actively decolonizing the curriculum and being humbled and amazed at the extent to which she is ideologically colonized, Jyoti's class offerings at MICA are a true collaboration with students, since she learns as much as she imparts!! Her first book is called 'Claiming India: French Academics and the Preoccupation with India in the 19th century' where Jyoti unpacks the nationalistic and colonizing agenda behind the conscious creation, by France, of 'India' as a discrete identity. Her second book, currently in the process of publication compares the agenda behind the different 'Indias' constructed by Britain (main colonizer), France (competition) and the US (global economic and evangelical influencer). She is also actively reclaiming and uncovering the rich history of South Asians in America, starting from the Jamestown settlement in Virginia!!
