“I'm proud to make art full-time and to be creating community through hosting a Sketchbook Club and a Nature Journaling Club!”

For Spencer Beals ’22 (General Fine Arts BFA, Ecosystems, Sustainability & Justice minor), one of the most meaningful experiences at MICA was participating in critiques with Lauren Adams, where they developed the language and confidence to talk about art—an invaluable skill that continues to shape their creative journey.

Since graduating in 2022, Spencer has fully embraced life as a working artist, dedicating their time to both personal practice and community-building. They host Sketchbook Club and Nature Journaling Club, fostering spaces where artists of all levels can gather, create, and connect through shared creativity.

Looking ahead, Spencer has big aspirations—to publish books and continue growing as an artist, pushing their work to new heights. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

His advice for current and future students? “Work really hard and find four to five people you connect with really well and keep in touch after graduation.”
