Art Education 4+1 Year (B.F.A./M.A.T.)

Art Education 4+1 Year (B.F.A./M.A.T.)

The B.F.A./M.A.T 4+1 is an opportunity to maximize your educational experience by earning your B.F.A. in the studio major of your choosing, while also fulfilling education requirements that prepare you for graduate level work in art education. With the expert support of the MAT Coordinator of Undergraduate Art Education and Academic Advisor, students can earn a B.F.A. and an M.A.T. in just five years.

In the 4+1 B.F.A./M.A.T. program, teacher candidates develop mastery as artists and teachers simultaneously through study of strategies for teaching and studio investigations. Through this process, teacher candidates successfully integrate personal artistry with the skill and understanding to direct the art making of others. The program includes a comprehensive, studio based, learner-centered, context sensitive approach to the teaching of art. The program’s goal is to prepare teachers who can engage young people with art in deeply meaningful ways.

Program Overview

The 4+1 B.F.A./M.A.T. program is a Maryland State Approved Program for art teacher licensure certification in grades preK–12.

M.A.T. coursework supports meeting all licensure requirements for Maryland. Students with interest in destinations outside Maryland should check to see what requirements from other states they might need to consider.

All students take national teacher exams (Praxis exams) as part of the program; passing scores, as set by the state of Maryland, are required for completion of the program and degree. For more information on edTPA requirements, see MD Department of Education edTPA Requirements
