In the 4+2 M.A.T. program, candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree may apply to the two-year MAT program track. This graduate program provides a comprehensive, studio based, learner-centered, context sensitive approach to the teaching of art.
Program Overview
Through immersive experiences in PreK-12 art classrooms across the Baltimore region , teacher candidates synthesize experiences in artmaking, teaching, and research in order to take informed and responsible action that supports learners' varied needs. Teacher candidates learn to develop and sequence instruction through innovative curriculum design grounded in their expertise as artists, teachers, and researchers, and with careful consideration of the needs and interests of their learners. Upon completion of the program, teacher candidates will have explored a range of educational theories and experienced a variety of pedagogical practices in order to confidentially enter professional practice as an art educator.
With a 100% placement rate over many years, our graduates distinguish themselves as artists, educators, and leaders as advocates and agents of change – throughout the U.S. and beyond.
All students prepare for national teacher exams as part of the program; passing scores, as set by the state of Maryland, are required for completion of the program and degree. For more information on edTPA requirements, see MD Department of Education edTPA Requirements.
