MICA’s open-air gallery for art and ecology

gallery alley is open all day, every day, and is free and open to the public! You can find us in the W. Trenton St alley between Maryland Ave and Falls Rd in Baltimore City! (gallery alley is #23 on the MICA Campus Map here)

gallery alley transforms a MICA-owned segment of the West Trenton Street (located between two MICA-owned buildings comprising the Fred Lazarus IV Center along North Avenue and Falls Road) into an open-air art and green space celebrating art and ecology. gallery alley features creative work (in all of its diverse forms, media, and disciplines) by MICA alumni, faculty, staff, and students, and celebrates the rich cultural and ecological heritage of the nearby Jones Falls River and surrounding Station North Arts District.

The transformation of the alley began with a 2024 collaboration between MICA and Midtown Baltimore to install the vibrant “Color Rays” mural by MICA alum Jaz Erenberg. This inspired a broader vision including closing the alley to vehicular traffic in May 2026, and installing additional permanent and temporary artworks created by the MICA community; creative and architectural lighting; an outdoor sound system for open air performances and events; and a complete resurfacing and reengineering of the alley with pedestrian pathways, landscaping with native plants, and a stormwater management system to demonstrate best practices in ecological stewardship.

gallery alley - public opening + celebration

McCormick; a poetry reading by Baltimore poet unique is the word (Unique Robinson); a live performance “Intersticial” organized by Taro Cantú and choreographed by Mexican dancer and choreographer Camila Arroyo and soundtracked by Dominican-American DJ Alejandra Nuñez in collaboration with Mexican DJ Andrea Aguilar; and food by The Empanada Lady.
