Joshua Fetzer '16 (illustration) - The Hunt

Joshua Fetzer

The Hunt is a line with key themes of the pursuit of the unattainable, divisions of gender, and acceptance of the inhuman. The inspiration for this work comes from recent encounters with ideas of feminine power and influence in contemporary culture as well as the depiction of the hunt of women in historical contexts, accessing works with themes similar to the Unicorn Tapestries. The designs are not meant to be a personification of animals but rather a personification of the mythos of the woman as animal. In myth, women are often transformed into creatures and compared to animals to allow for their degradation and for their contextual change to the obvious "prey." Even in popular culture, the idea of man being "on the hunt" for a woman has led to a subconscious link between women and prey. These designs are meant to mix the stereotypes that once caged women, with aesthetics and themes that are now accessed as liberating.
