The MBA/MA in Design Leadership program offers two degrees: an MBA from Johns Hopkins University's (JHU) Carey Business School and an MA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The program is focused on building the management capacity of individuals from a range of disciplines that include design and art, science and technology, and business. Our students aspire to become transformative leaders who engage organizations through creative processes that result in innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

This is the only program in the country where students simultaneously work to earn graduate degrees from both a major college of art and design and a business school at a major research university.

The program helps students gain a competitive advantage as leaders through an emphasis on design thinking. While some content deals with creative design processes, the curriculum concentrates on problem identification, targeting objectives and audiences, immersion into research, implementation of design thinking and strategy, and an overall collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. The curriculum delivers the knowledge necessary to prepare students for leadership positions in the private, nonprofit, and public service sectors.

Completed in twenty (20) months, the program begins with a MICA-run, four-credit summer intensive (Foundations of Design Leadership) that provides the heterogeneous student cohort a basis of shared knowledge, skills, and nomenclature. In the fall, students enroll in classes available through JHU's Carey Business School part-time MBA program and in MICA's MA in Design Leadership curriculum.
