The program seeks to enroll a diverse population of students, and candidates can include fine arts graduates, college faculty, K-12 art educators, as well as working professionals in community arts, social services, youth development, arts, and nonprofit management who wish to engage in advanced artmaking practice that builds on their community involvement. Graduates of MICA's MA in Community Arts program who seek to focus on their personal creative vision based on work in community are also encouraged to apply. Successful candidates for this program will have:
- A high level of artistic proficiency;
- The desire to integrate community art-based or community-collaborative activities with their personal artmaking practice;
- The ability and openness to work collaboratively with other artists and community representatives;
- A commitment to civic engagement, community building, and social justice.
