The Center for Social Design at Maryland Institute College of Art, a 2014 winner of the Ashoka U - Cordes Innovation Award, is sponsored the inaugural Social Design Lab at Ashoka U Exchange 2015 in Washington, DC.

Ashoka U is an initiative of Ashoka, the world's largest network of social entrepreneurs. Founded in 2005, Ashoka U is the university division of Ashoka focused on collaborating with colleges and universities to foster campus-wide cultures of social innovation. The Ashoka U Exchange is the world's largest convening for social entrepreneurship in higher education. The Exchange brings together 650 university faculty, staff, administrators and students representing 150 institutions to share new ways of teaching and learning that will shape the way educational institutions influence the world.

Over the years, Exchange attendees have expressed the desire for a space to brainstorm new ideas for collaboration and to interact informally with one another. The MICA Social Design Lab included both open, unstructured space for attendees to meet and share, as well as design thinking workshops - facilitated by MICA Social Design graduate students - exploring ideas to advance social innovation within higher education.

Center for Social Design Associate Becky Slogeris moderated a session at the Exchange on K-12 & University Partnerships, and Co-Director Lee Davis moderated a panel on the Pedagogy of Design Thinking.

The Master of Arts Social Design program at MICA, is an intensive, 1-year graduate program grounded in a philosophy of practice-based learning combining theory and praxis, both action and reflection. The curriculum introduces students to a broad theoretical framework for social design, exposes them to a variety of methods and models for social impact, and prepares them with a core set of skills necessary to pursue professional opportunities upon graduation.
