Posted 03.12.10 by Karol Martinez

This summer, six MICA students are going to be chosen for a special weeklong program to work collaboratively on improving Baltimore, the nation and this world. Will you be one of them?

MICA is pleased to announce its participation in the first Baltimore-area LeaderShape Institute. LeaderShape is a national program designed to help college students create vision and action plans for improving their communities, states, nations and the world. The Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape program will bring together 60 students from 14 Baltimore-area colleges and universities to collaboratively strategize, envision and work towars building a better Baltimore. MICA will fully fund the registration costs for the six students representing our student body.

Because the Baltimore Collegetown Institute is focused on bringing together students who have an interest in improving Baltimore, we are seeking student applicants who care specifically about one or more of the following focus areas:

  • K-12 Education (tutoring, mentoring, teacher support, before/after school programs)
  • Sustainability/Green (recycling, tree canopy, community garden, park use/maintenance)
  • Neighborhood Revitalization (housing, economic development, community programs)
  • Health & Families (domestic abuse, children of prisoners, early childhood development, absentee fathers)
  • Healthcare (HIV, homelessness, drug treatment, education)

Applications are online at www.BaltimoreCollegetown.org/LeaderShape and are due March 15. An independent jury panel will select a diverse group of five to six rising sophomores and juniors from each college or university. The institute will take place at MICA in the Gateway Building from Aug.15-20, 2010. The student will be expected to pay a small portion ($100 or less) of the costs of their participation in the program, which will be refundable upon completion of the program.
