BALTIMORE -- MICA continues to set the standard for cutting-edge art and design education by launching the following new graduate programs in 2012: M.P.S. in Information Visualization and M.A. in Critical Studies. Additionally, the College has expanded upon its undergraduate offerings this fall with new concentrations in game arts, sound art, and sustainability and social practice.
DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW GRADUATE PROGRAMS:
M.P.S. in Information Visualization (2012)
MICA's new Master in Professional Studies (M.P.S.) program in Information Visualization, the first such program of its kind offered by an art and design college, prepares students from a variety of fields to translate their existing skills into the visualization industry and related areas. Providing strong emphasis on the development of visual literacy, visual thinking and the creative aspects of delivering information, this new M.P.S. program has been created for artists and designers as well as professionals working in fields where the management of complex data through visualization is essential-including architecture, urban planning, homeland security, health, social networking, business and more. A mix of short residencies at MICA and online study allows the program to meet the needs of working professionals. Over the course of the program, students develop technical, conceptual and design competencies in the broad area of information visualization, enabling them to advance their current career or open up new career opportunities. M.A. in Critical Studies (2012)
The Master of Arts in Critical Studies program provides artists and designers with an in-depth grounding in critical writing and analysis. This new program allows students of all backgrounds to expand their knowledge and theoretical vocabulary as they are guided in the production of cutting-edge criticism for both popular and scholarly venues. A dedicated faculty of scholar-teacher-practitioners who are established in their professional fields lead students through a topical practicum series, collaborative and individual projects, intensive research and specialized seminars in visual art, design, literature, philosophy, film studies and performance-all of which are complemented by a graduate colloquium with some of the most exciting thinkers and creative practitioners as invited speakers. M.A. candidates gain a deep understanding of theory along with valuable skills in research, writing and analysis, and graduates go on to be creative professionals, art critics and journalists, or to pursue additional graduate study in the humanities, fine arts and design. DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW UNDERGRADUATE CONCENTRATIONS:
Concentration in Game Arts (2011)
The Game Arts Concentration, building upon the success of current Interaction Design and Art Department courses in games and game theory, approaches the subject from a broad perspective. Students will learn skills necessary to make games in a variety of forms and media, from off-screen to screen-based and beyond. Unlike other game programs, the 15-credit concentration, open to all majors, focuses on games and play as participatory systems and as a form of art.
Concentration in Sound Art (2011)
The new Sound Art Concentration, administered by the Interaction Design and Art Department, will teach students techniques, histories and concepts that can be used to work with sound expressively and creatively within their own artmaking practice. The concentration will cover digital and analog models and systems, but will always approach sound as an art form. The omnipresence of sound in art today, along with the wealth of commercial audio apps and hardware currently available, makes sound as an expressive art form an essential addition to MICA's curriculum. Concentration in Sustainability and Social Practice (2011)
The Sustainability and Social Practice Concentration-the first of its kind among art colleges-prepares students to engage their creative practice with the social and ecological issues facing the world today, earning the knowledge, language and skills necessary to excel in this emerging field. This new concentration allows visual artists to connect their practice with these global issues and prepares them to become professionally engaged in the areas of sustainability and social practice as artists, designers, entrepreneurs or scholars. The issues of sustainability and social practice are not specific to any one field, material or discipline, and, as such, this 15-credit concentration is a cross-departmental program open to all undergraduate majors.
