The Book Arts of Ellen Dorn Levitt
Curated by Veronica Lathroum
May 9 - June 10, 2016

Ellen Dorn Levitt was an artist, teacher, and bookmaker. Born in New Jersey in 1947, Levitt attended the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1965-1969. After settling in Vermont in 1973, Levitt flourished in her professional life, and her greatest passion was as an art teacher and book arts instructor. She taught at Lyndon Institute and Lyndon State College in Vermont. Diagnosed with cancer in 2013, Levitt retired her teaching position at Lyndon Institute to receive treatment; she passed away in 2014.

The materials in this exhibit are selected from the Ellen Dorn Levitt Book Arts Collection, donated to MICA's Decker Library in 2015 by Levitt's husband Mark Levitt and her colleague and friend Linda Lembke. The bulk of the collection features examples of completed book arts projects from Levitt's classes over the years, in addition to many instructional materials used in her courses. Levitt taught a variety of illustration, printing, and bookmaking techniques, often working collaboratively and hosting visiting artists for specialized projects.

The collection is housed in Decker Library's Special Collections, and was processed by Veronica Lathroum, a graduate student in the University of Maryland's Master of Library Science program, as a field study project in Spring 2016, with help from Decker Library staff members Allison Fischbach, Kathy Cowan, and Kelly Swickard.
