Are you entrepreneurially minded and have a great idea for a business or product? Are you a maker with a creative passion looking to turn your hobby into a thriving business? Have you already started a business and want to take it to the next level?
If you're a 2016 MICA graduate or a member of the class of 2017 (see below for full details), MICA's Up/Start Venture Competition could be your chance to make your dreams a reality.
Up/Start 2017 is MICA's second annual startup contest that focuses on incubating creative business ventures within the College community.
An initiative of MICApreneurship, spearheaded by the Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development, UP/Start provides capital and mentorship with industry partners to help nurture ideas into sustainable businesses.
Up to five winners will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of Baltimore-based and national business leaders, and will receive investment funding totaling $100,000.
"Approximately 50% of MICA students will be creative entrepreneurs at some point in their careers," said Stephanie Chin, MICA's assistant director of entrepreneurship. "Now in its second year, Up/Start reflects MICA's commitment to supporting its students as artists, designers, innovators and entrepreneurs, and provides students and recent alumni first-hand entrepreneurial experience outside the classroom."
The first round of the competition is a "pop up and pitch" event where participants will present their business and venture ideas to a panel of judges. The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 3, at the Leidy Atrium, Brown Center. MICA students, faculty and staff can attend to vote for the "People's Choice" honoree, who will advance to the final round of the competition. A practice pitching session for applicants will be held on Friday, Jan. 27, in Gateway 101.
Following the pitches, eight finalists will be selected to present their businesses and innovative ideas in the finale event Thursday, April 13.
The deadline for applications is Sunday, Jan. 22, and the competition is open to MICA students in the class of 2017 and alumni from the class of 2016. (International students are not eligible to receive funding, but are welcome to participate in the competition's first round for feedback on their ideas.) Individuals and groups can enter as long as one member of the team is a MICA student or alumnus and meets the participation requirements.
