Solar Circuit Aotearoa New Zealand (SCANZ) 3rd Nature Residency
Friday Jan. 18th–Sunday Feb. 3rd
Intercreate Research Centre, Western Institute of Technology, Taranaki, New Zealand
Brooke Sturtevant-Sealover '11 (MFA in Studio Art) has been invited to participate in the biannual SCANZ 3rd Nature Residency hosted by Intercreate Research Centre - one of New Zealand's premier arts, science, and technology events. It runs from January 18th to February 3rd and will take place at the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki.
3rd Nature involves creativity and innovation at the intersection of three critical interfaces: acknowledging the environmental crisis, engaging with Maori and indigenous peoples, and engaging with Sciences and the Hybrid Arts. These three intersecting dialogues provide space for a Third Nature, a fresh space for engaging with new knowledge and approaches vital to a sustainable civilization.
Brooke Sturtevant-Sealover investigates the vitality of plants through their changes in growth and morphology as a result of being placed in carefully constructed situations. Through the use of generative notation and the data collected from her investigations she constructs two, three, and four-dimensional drawings. Her method of working, which creates unintended visual results, leaves open the possibility for producing a new awareness concerning the nature of the plant's growth and intentions.
While in New Zealand she hopes to study the interactions between the plants, other living organisms, and the environment, as well as carry on a dialogue and/or collaborate with scientists, and to create a set of traditional and/or allographic drawings based on collected data.
