I blend fact and fiction to stage works that combine absurdity and awkwardness with beauty
Painting from dreams, films, music, theatre, fashion, and my own experiences, I blend fact and fiction to stage works that combine absurdity and awkwardness with beauty, comedy, and tragedy. The work pulls from various references to create an absurd, theatrical world, organizing these disparate images in a way that makes sense to me. In the resulting paintings reality erodes, meanings mix together, and narratives blend.
My work highlights fashion in the context of painting. Fashion is an art that we can all connect with, yet value very little. What one wears is an expression of one’s own aesthetic. Fashion is an outlet for escaping reality and the fashion editorials I reference are the essence of an ideal fantasy. Fantasy, theatre, performance, sets, the curtain, and audience are elements Iuse in my work. Like a play or performance, the viewer must then choose to interact with the work to get the most out of the experience.
